ADI Examinations

 

Part 1 - The ADI Theory Test

 

  1. A computer based examination in two sections, both of which must be passed at the same sitting
  2. The multi-choice section has 100 questions
  3. Each question has 4 possible answers - touch the computer screen to select the correct answer
  4. The time allowed is 90 minutes and the pass mark is 85% overall and 80% in each of 4 subsections
  5. The hazard awareness section consists of a series of video clips showing road scenes with developing hazards - click the mouse key to show you have spotted the hazard

 

Part 2 - The Driving Ability Test

 

  1. A practical examination in driving ability, similar to an L test, but much more advanced
  2. Lasts about an hour and a quarter
  3. Includes town and country driving, as well as motorways
  4. You will be asked to do the following reversing manoeuvres - turn in the road, reverse into a side road on the left, reverse into a side road on the right, reverse park around a car, or reverse into a parking bay
  5. You will also need to demonstrate an emergency stop
  6. A maximum of 6 minor faults allowed, and no serious or dangerous faults
  7. The examiner will give you the result at the end of the drive

 

Part 3 - The Instructional Test

 

  1. A practical examination in instruction ability, where the candidate teaches the examiner as if he or she were a pupil learning to drive
  2. Lasts about an hour, divided into 2 phases
  3. In the first phase, the examiner will role play the part of a pupil at an early stage in their training
  4. You will need to teach your "pupil" a set exercise that they have not done before
  5. In the second phase, the examiner will role play a pupil close to test standard
  6. Your "pupil" will have some difficulties that you will need to recognise, analyse, and rectify
  7. The examiner will give you the result at the end of the examination
